Meet Night Furry
Most of the furniture pieces that I paint are girls. Really! Their lines are generally feminine and I tend to stick to more feminine colors and designs. But when this piece came into my life, I knew it was a boy and a dragon. Meet Night Fury.
Yes, as in the dragon named Toothless from How to Train your Dragon. Scientifically known as a “Seadragonus Giganitcus Maximus.” You can tell I have 2 boys! This piece kind of transformed into the friendly dragon with a little help from Sweet Pickins Milk Paint in Lantern.
I went with the black milk paint because the original finish on this piece was very, very red. I was pretty sure that it was going to give me nightmares with red bleed through if I used a light color paint. So sometimes, a piece just tells you what color it should be painted.
I sprayed this piece down with shellac just to be sure that the red stain wouldn’t bleed and because I wanted to control the amount of chipping this piece had. You can read about that in my tutorial on Milk Paint for Control Freaks.
I applied 2 coats of Lantern Milk Paint and then I went back over this piece with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface and distress around the edges.
I finished this piece with a coat of Sweet Pickins Supreme Soft Wax in Clear and then added a coat of Supreme Soft Wax in Jacobean to hide any of the haze clear wax can get leave on dark furniture. I buffed it to a nice sheen with a “Better than Cheesecloth” towel. Seriously, you have to try these! I love the way that it turned out. It is deridingly masculine and I think it will make an amazing addition to someones dining room or kitchen as a buffet. It would even look amazing as a tv console. It still has that chippy farmhouse look but without being too shabby chic feminine. So if you have a house full of guys like I do, you should bring this piece home! You can keep it’s nickname, or just rename it beautiful!
Here’s a little side by side to show you the resemblance.

I love that your pieces are boys and girls. I kept referring to the piece I just finished as she and thought I was the only one! Great job once again….and good choice on the black. Unfortunately it is normally the only option with wood like that. Hope things are going well for you Adrienne!
