I love it when I get a new holiday catalog from one of my favorite retailers. I’m always inspired by the styling and fresh decor. But alas I am merely a looky-loo. The prices of many of these items are crazy town and these days you can DIY just about anything! Including this Galvanized Tree Collar I recently found in a high end retailer catalog.
But $70 or more? Nope. So off to the hardware store I went to buy a galvanized tub…. for $27.
Here’s What You’ll Need For This Project
Galvanized Steel Tub (I used a 17 gallon tub)

At first the plan was to just sit the tree inside the tub and call it a day. But after realizing the diameter of the tree stand was wider than the base of the tub a new plan was made. I could make the galvanized tub into a Christmas tree collar.
Using a drill, put a whole in the base of the tub. This is just so that you have a place to start your jigsaw.
Using your jigsaw with a blade made for cutting metal remove the base of your galvanized tub. I wish I had a giant can opener for this job.
Then split the bucket down the side as well. Just be careful as your edges will be a little sharp.
You can pound down the edges a bit though to keep your little fingers safe.
Your galvanized tub Christmas tree collar will have a little bit of stretch to to it. But just to make your life easier, place it over your Christmas tree base before you put the tree in. Trust me. Otherwise your dear husband will be lifting the tree and the base that you just filled with water into the tree collar. Good thing he has super hero strength!
Since writing this post there are many more affordable versions of this christmas tree collar available. If you’d prefer not to DIY here are some links to a few of my favorites..
Love this idea! Your tree and space are beautiful too!
The last few years I’ve placed my Christmas tree in a galvanized tub and loved it. This year we got a new tree and it wouldn’t fit it the tub. Noooo! But you have come to my rescue!! I never thought about turning my tub into a collar! Perfect!
Ha- I’m totally laughing because we actually built a little stand to fit inside the bucket for the tree to sit stable so the bucket would work. Didn’t think of doing it like this. 🙂 My hubs will get a good chuckle after our afternoon dealing with it.
Fabulous tree and awesome tree collar! Thanks so much for the tutorial. I’m pinning and sharing!

This is such a great idea and your tree is beautiful. Thanks so much for linking up to Your Designs This Time! I’m pinning to our features and favorites board.
can you explain why you split the side of the bucket? Just bought my tubs.
We had to make a split in it because our Christmas tree stand was so big. If I had purchased a larger tub or a smaller christmas tree stand it would have been fine, no cut needed.
What size tub did you use? I love this idea!!!
Thanks! I think it’s about a 17 gallon tub. I picked it because the sides are tall enough to conceal the tree stand. But our tree stand is kind of big and I didn’t want to buy a new one.
i have been using a standard galvanized tub for my artificial tree for several years; i bought though a sturdy stand that fits inside of it. Love the look.
Absolutely love this ♡ Merry Christmas from Texas! !
Thanks Margie!
