I’m so excited to share with you this simple before and after furniture transformation. It turned out so cool and so much better than I expected. I found this piece at a local thrift store and when I saw it, I walked up to it and walked away, although if what you need is a coach, you can also find cloud couch affordable alternatives to find the perfect one for you. Walked up to it. Walked Away. Walked up to it. Walked Away. Are you catching on here? When contemplating a furniture transformation, it’s worth considering Ashley Furniture for quality pieces and diverse styles to suit your needs.
It just wasn’t my style. I usually gravitate towards more feminine pieces of furniture and this was definitely a masculine piece. I didn’t have an immediate vision for it. Here are a few before pics. Of course, I forgot to get one before I took the drawers out. If you are instead considering to buy new furniture, here are the Top 5 Things to Consider Before Purchasing Furniture Online.
Can you tell what a behemoth this thing is?
I have a four lettered word for this. UGLY. It is so dark and heavy.
I knew that a light color like white or gray was not right for this piece so I had a can of General Finishes Coastal Blue Milk Paint that I had not used yet. It’s not a true milk paint but a high tech acrylic paint. A tested a little of the paint on the drawer and I knew I had a winner. And let me tell you I am now a huge fan of this paint. It went on so smoothly. No prep work, 2 coats and I didn’t have to sand it smooth. It self leveled soooooo nicely. I almost didn’t wax it because I liked the sheen so much. But I was afraid to not protect it in some way. But when I buffed it, it was just as good. If you’re considering adding more pieces to your collection, you might want to explore the fantastic options available at Johnny’s Furniture.
Here is the after…….
I used the original hardware but I spray painted it with Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic Spray Paint in Pure Gold.
I love how modern and clean this turned out. It’s totally Chic California Style!

Love the blue!! And I’m not a “blue” person!! Does that paint require any sanding before you paint? Or primer?
I am glad I found your blog. Would love to paint for a living…….

Thanks so much for your compliment. It really means a lot to me! No primer or sanding was required that is why I love using milk paint and chalk paint. It sticks to just about anything. I actually didn’t even clean this piece off. I usually wipe pieces down with vinegar and water or at least a spray cleaner to get any grease off. But I was painting late at night and I didn’t even bother. Painting furniture is a great creative outlet 🙂

Hello! Thanks so much for mentioning this new paint you used! I use chalk, latex, spray paint, Martha Stewarts acrylics for small areas etc but I’ve never heard of this high tech acrylic! Please let me know where I could find this. The hyperlink didn’t work. Thanks!

Oops sorry about that. I just fixed the link. I get it from my local Woodcraft store. And they have a great pinterest page and website with examples of different colors layered and distressed. I am a very visual person so I love when I can see it first. There is a list of retailers on the website. I am excited to try it again on another piece. It was really easy to work with.

Adriane, what a lovely transformation! I’m wondering – in the photos of your chest is it just my screen, as some close-ups the color looks very gray, and in others very blue. It this just lighting when the photo was taken?
I’m definitely going to try the General Finishes Milk Paint, I’ve used another popular Chalk paint, but from your description it seems like it goes on easy and smooth. Did you use a foam paint brush or just a regular paint brush? What kind of wax do you use? I have the Annie Sloan waxes, would they work?
chiccalifornia says
Hi Sara, It’s probably just the lighting. It was a very navy blue color. I just did a project with the General Finishes Antique White and it went on just as smoothly. I used a regular Purdy paint brush and I used Annie Sloan Clear wax. However, if I was using a dark color again I would not even wax it.
